Continuation of Wilson/Enke book published in 1977. The following names are often unfamiliar to me. Mary Ann was the fourth child of William White Wilson and Lydia Enke Wilson. Here are her children.
Harry Brachvogel "was born June 24, 1891, in Beadle County. He attended rural schools. When a young man, he moved to Forsyth, Monatana, and filed on a homestead. He married Zola Martin on Marcy 15, 1919. The later moved back to South Dakota to Spink County. He farmed south of Tulare for many years. They were the parents of 6 children; William, Mary Elizabeth, Irmalee, Neva, Patricia, and Jean. They moved to Redfield in later years where he worked in the Redfield State School. He passed away in Redfield on January 29, 1958. His wife Zola is living in Sullivan, Indiana. She lives in a government housing project. She crochets and embroiders, but her eyes are failing as she has slow moving cataracts. She does her own cooking and laundry. Her interests are watching TV and reading."
William Brachvogel - "(Taken from the Times Enterprise) He was born in Omaha, Nebraska, Dec. 14, 1892. He moved to the Wessington locality when nine years of age and resided there until the spring of 1918 when he went to Montana. In July of the same year he joined the army and was sent to Camp Lewis, Washington, and on August 15 as a member of the 308th Infantry, 77th Division, he went overseas. He was killed in action, as a member of the same unit in the Great Argonne Offensive, on the 8th day of October, 1918. His brother Walter also was in the service at the same time. Later his body was brought, Minnesota, and given full honors of a military funeral, in charge of the John G. Watson Post of the American Legion. He was buried in the Wessington cemetery."
Walter Brachvogel "was born in Omaha, Nebraska, December 2, 1894. He moved with his parents at an early age to a farm in Beadle County, north of Wessington, South Dakota, where he attended rural schools. In 1917 he moved to Montana near Forsyth where he filed on a homestead. In July, 1918 he entered the service, serving in France. He was wounded and served seven months in army hospitals. He received an honorable discharge in June, 1919, and returned to Montana. He later moved back to SD where he farmed in Buffalo Township, Spink County. He married Vernice McNeely on April 15, 1925. They had one son, Walter. In 1957 they sold their farm and moved to Redfield where he worked for Spink County Implement until 1966. He passed away January 11, 1969 at the age of 74. He was active in the American Legion at Wessington, the VFW of Redfield, and the WWI of Redfield. He was awarded the Silver Star posthumously on March 30, 1970. A Year with Prairie Roots Blog Site
It's been exactly a year since I started the Daugherty Carrington Prairie Roots Blogsite. In the year 2009 I entered 144 posts. Some months were well represented, while others could have been better. That is the nature of a blog. Writing is something that needs to have deliberate time and effort given to it. Ideas are always there but not always the energy nor incentive to follow through. I believe that is a rather human characteristic and am not totally bothered by it.
I just changed the look of the blog. Changes are good. As mentioned before, the purpose of this site isn't necessarily to gather a huge readership. I have an excuse to go through my many notes again and reconnect with contributors. Writing down these thoughts is very helpful. Writing down names and dates reinforces their places in the history of Mother's family. I am pleased to say that in several instances people googled the name of their ancestors and found my blog. We now have a source for communicating with each other.
I get very few comments right on the site from readers. Not sure how to correct this...something to learn this new year. Most comments are sent to me when clicking on the white letter icon at the end of my message.
This year has been hard for all of us, with Dad's passing Nov. 2, 2008. We've been getting Mom's (Helen Irene Daugherty Hostvet) house ready for selling, which has not yet transpired, due to the economic situation up north. Mom lives here in New Richmond, WI and her family has been in constant touch. Finding out family history has been very important to her. This week her cousin Ernie Meyer (Elda Carrington's son) unexpectantly called her on the phone. They talked for an hour making her day a delight. Similar situations have been happening since I began the quarterly newsletter, Prairie Roots nearly four years ago and this blogsite 12 months ago.
My thanks to all of you that have communicated in some way with our family. We are interconnected whether it be in the present or generations past. You've helped me learn a lot about the history of our nation and the attitudes of these families that have made America their homes for many generations.
I'm hoping for a contination of letters and messages from readers. I'd like to have a better understanding of how to find out official information. Re-enlisting in Ancestry.com should help me with that. Though I have a nice collection of family photos, I'd like to add to it. I need to continue to catch up in organization of materials. I need to make more phone calls. Somehow E-Mailing seems much easier than actually dialing those phone numbers.
Joe, I, Nate and Betsy (and our cat, Oliver) wish all of you a wonderful New Year. We all have resolutions that we would like to attempt, but perhaps any growth in pursuing interest and concerns that are important to us is the ideal goal. Judy Hostvet/Paulson

Back to Wilson-Enke Book, 1977
I still have quite a bit to share from the Wilson-Enke book, written in 1977 by Bonnie Cavenee Runge. I've gotten in touch with "new" family members by people searching the Internet and finding this blogsite! It's good for me to go through these people and becoming more familiar with names and dates. We are continuing with more of Laura Carrington Daugherty's family. Organizing Family Papers, Part 3
It's amazing how quickly papers can get piled up. I try to save every snippet of information possible and put them in loose leaf notebooks.
Still on the subject of Lucius Carrington, Thomas Shawcrosse, my 4th cousin 1x, says that Lucius was born in Iowa. He died Oct. 1910 in Councel Bluffs, Ia. I've wanted to get his death certificate. Lucius had traveled to Council Bluffs, IA to seek treatment but he died at the threshold of the doctor's office. He was buried in Wessington, Beadle, SD. He had married Rosetta Wilson Dec. 2, 1892.
I've got my grandfather, Hjalmar Hostvet's honorable discharge papers. He enlisted in the army at 24 1/4 years of age and was afarmer. He had blue eyes, brown hair, fair complexion and was 5 feet 8 inches in height. He was discharged from Camp Dodge, Iowa on the 24th of July, 1919. He was a corporal. No wounds. He was single at the time. Hjalmar was evidentlly paid with 9 Service Bonds. totalling $485.03.
A bit of paper suggesting that my 8th great grandmother, Rebecca Carrington was the daughter of John Carrington and Joan...who were hung as witches in Weathersfield, Connecticut in 1652. Though their surnames were Carrington, it is through the Bartholomew family that we are related. It would be exciting to prove a relationship with our Carrington family as well. A few generations later, Isaac Bartholomew comes into play.
William Daugherty's Land Grant comes next. Dated Feb. 16, 1818, in Illinois. Number 14657. Sect. I, Twp 11-N, Range 3-E, Knox County.
